The ammonite fossil shell pendant featured in this necklace is beautifully complemented with brown banded agate and black onyx gemstone beads. Each pendant is unique, due to its natural organic material. The pendant measures 47mm in length when including its bail. The back side of the pendant, as seen in the third photo, has a slight opal sheen.
Ammonites are a prehistoric type of marine mollusk that went extinct with the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. They were squid-like creatures that lived inside coil-shaped shells. They constantly built new shell as they grew, but only lived in the outer chamber. They scooted through the warm, shallow seas by squirting jets of water from their bodies.
An ammonite fossil forms when their shells became embedded in sand or silt. The shell was protected from damage over time due to the forming layers. As the layers formed and created pressure on the shell, mineral-rich water would seep into the chambers and eventually crystallize it into the rock-like fossil we find today. Ammonite can sometimes end up with a rainbow-like sheen on the surface, opalized or pyritized.
Ammonites, with their spiral shape, are symbols of change and positive motion. The spiral draws in negative energy, filtering it through the chambers and releases fresh, positive energy. The ammonite is believed to be a powerful earth healing fossil, and are thought to help stimulate the life force within.
Ammonites are related to the Astrological Zodiac signs of Aquarius and Cancer.
