Orthoceras are the fossilized remains of an extinct marine animal that lived more than 400 million years ago… a time when the Earth was mostly covered in water.  Over the ages, orthoceras shells that accumulated on the ocean floor where covered by sediment, and transformed into stone.  Its fossilized surface is ornamented by a network of fine lines and ridges.

Orthoceras are an ancestor to ammonites and the modern-day squid.  The name orthoceras means “straight horn” which refers to its long, straight conical shell.  Throughout its life, orthoceras grew its shell bigger for its soft squid-like body by creating a new dividing wall inside the shell, called a septa.  Today, you can see the septas separated by lines in the fossil.  Scientists can tell the age of the orthoceras by looking at how many lines there are.

Orthoceras fossils are said to reinforce earth energies as well as support it by helping to balance emotions, increase confidence, and stimulate the mind- leading to openness and innovation.  Some ancient tales even suggest that wearing orthoceras daily can increase your lifespan.

The picasso serpentine gemstone heishi beads are black with marbled and speckled inclusions of gray.  Serpentine is said to have a calming effect against nervousness and stress.  It is believed to help in balancing mood swings and bring inner peace.  The gemstone is also said to promote good luck and bring confidence to its wearer.
